📖 Synopsis (Spoiler-Free)
Every summer, Rocky and her family spend a week together in their beloved Cape Cod vacation rental. It’s a familiar tradition filled with beach days, family dinners, inside jokes, and the comfortable rhythms of a life well-lived.
But this year feels different.
Caught between aging parents, grown children, a long marriage, and the realities of midlife, Rocky finds herself reflecting on the past while trying to navigate the present. As old memories surface and new challenges emerge, she begins to examine what it means to care for everyone around her while still making space for herself.
Funny, heartfelt, and deeply relatable, Sandwich is a beautiful portrait of family, aging, motherhood, marriage, and the messy, wonderful middle years of life.
💭 My Thoughts
What I Loved
This book completely surprised me.
I expected a quiet family drama, but what I got was one of the most honest, hilarious, and emotionally insightful books I’ve read in a long time.
Rocky felt incredibly real. Her inner thoughts were funny, awkward, vulnerable, and painfully relatable. Catherine Newman captures the experience of being a middle-aged woman so perfectly that I found myself laughing one minute and tearing up the next.
The family dynamics were beautifully written. Every interaction felt authentic—from the loving moments to the frustrating ones. The characters felt like people I’ve known my entire life.
One of my favorite things about this book was how it celebrated ordinary life. There are no shocking twists or dramatic cliffhangers. Instead, the story finds beauty in everyday moments, reminding readers that some of life’s biggest emotional revelations happen quietly.
And Chapter 12?
Absolutely one of the funniest chapters I’ve read all year. I laughed so hard I had to pause the audiobook.
The writing itself is phenomenal. Catherine Newman has a gift for making simple observations feel profound without ever becoming preachy or overly sentimental.
What Didn’t Work for Me
Honestly? Not much.
Readers looking for a fast-paced plot or high-stakes drama may find the story slower than expected. This is very much a character-driven novel focused on relationships, memories, and personal reflection.
But for me, that’s exactly what made it special.
🎧 Audiobook Review
The audiobook narration was outstanding.
The narrator perfectly captured Rocky’s humor, vulnerability, and warmth. The conversational delivery made it feel like I was listening to a close friend tell me the story of her life.
The emotional moments landed beautifully, while the comedic scenes felt even funnier in audio format.
This is one of those books I would strongly recommend experiencing as an audiobook.

🔥 Favorite Quote
“The thing about being alive is that you’re always in the middle of something.”

Life rarely gives us neat beginnings and endings. Most of the time we’re simply navigating the messy middle—trying our best, loving our people, and figuring things out as we go.
That’s exactly what Sandwich is about.

Overall, Sandwich was an unforgettable, deeply moving, and surprisingly funny read.
I gave it ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ because it captured the complexities of family, aging, motherhood, and marriage with remarkable honesty and heart. Catherine Newman manages to be laugh-out-loud funny while also delivering emotional truths that linger long after the final page.
This is one of those rare books that feels less like reading a story and more like spending time with someone who truly understands what it means to be human.
Without question, this will be one of my favorite books of the year.
