📖 Synopsis (Spoiler-Free)
Stevie Shay is hired as a flight attendant for a professional hockey team and quickly finds herself sharing close quarters with the team’s biggest star, Evan Zanders.
Zanders may be known as hockey’s favorite bad boy, but beneath the arrogance, endless confidence, and playboy reputation is a man carrying more weight than anyone realizes. Stevie, meanwhile, is smart, funny, and determined not to fall for the athlete who seems to charm everyone around him.
As the season progresses, their constant banter, undeniable chemistry, and growing friendship begin to blur the lines between professional and personal. What starts as attraction develops into something deeper as both characters confront insecurities, family issues, and the fear of being truly vulnerable.
Filled with humor, steam, emotional moments, and plenty of hockey, Mile High delivers a character-driven romance that goes beyond the typical sports romance formula.
💭 My Thoughts
What I Loved
The standout for me was the relationship development between Stevie and Zanders. Their connection felt genuine because it wasn’t built solely on attraction. They spent time getting to know each other, building trust, and becoming friends before fully embracing their feelings.
I also appreciated how Liz Tomforde tackled topics like body image, self-worth, anxiety, and mental health. These themes gave the story more emotional depth and made the characters feel relatable and human.
Stevie was a refreshing heroine. She was confident, witty, and unapologetically herself. I loved that she wasn’t written as a woman who suddenly became “perfect” after finding love.
As for Zanders? Once the layers started peeling back, I completely understood why readers fall for him. Beneath the cocky exterior was a surprisingly caring and emotionally vulnerable man.
The chemistry between these two was fantastic. The banter had me smiling, and the emotional moments balanced the steam well.
What Didn’t Work for Me
My biggest issue was the length. At nearly 600 pages, the story occasionally felt repetitive and could have benefited from tighter editing.
There were several sections in the middle where the pacing slowed considerably, and I found myself wanting the story to move forward a little faster.
While I enjoyed the dual POVs, some of the internal monologues covered similar emotional ground multiple times, which made certain scenes feel longer than necessary.
None of these issues ruined the reading experience, but they kept it from being a five-star read for me.
🎧 Audiobook Review
The audiobook experience was excellent and helped keep me engaged throughout such a lengthy story.
The narrators did a great job bringing both Stevie and Zanders to life, adding personality, humor, and emotion to every scene. The banter especially shined in audio format, making some of my favorite moments even more entertaining.
I do wish that the audio was done in duet narration. I have been spoiled by full cast and duet style narrations.
If you’re intimidated by the page count, I highly recommend the audiobook.

Final Verdict
Overall, Mile High was an emotional, swoony, and highly entertaining sports romance.
I gave it ⭐⭐⭐⭐ because I loved the characters, chemistry, and meaningful themes, but the length and slower pacing prevented it from being a five-star read for me.
Even at nearly 600 pages, I found myself invested in Stevie and Zanders’ journey, and I’m excited to continue with the rest of the Windy City series.
