📖 Synopsis (Spoiler-Free)
When barrister Leila Reynolds is assigned her first murder case, she is stunned by the magnitude of it. The victim is a highly respected judge, and the case is far beyond what anyone would expect her to handle at this stage of her career. Yet the accused, Jack Millman, insists that Leila—and only Leila—represent him.
There’s just one problem: Jack refuses to talk.
As if that weren’t challenging enough, Leila soon discovers that the lead prosecutor is none other than her husband. Determined to prove herself and secure a favorable outcome for her client, she throws herself into the case. But when a mysterious figure from her past resurfaces, old secrets threaten to unravel everything she has worked to build.
Caught between her professional ambitions, her marriage, and her own hidden truths, Leila must decide how far she is willing to go to win.
💭 My Thoughts
Guilty or not guilty? That’s for you to decide.
As someone who enjoys courtroom dramas, Dissection of a Murder immediately caught my attention. The story often felt like an episode of Law & Order—filled with legal maneuvering, unanswered questions, and enough uncertainty to keep me second-guessing every character’s motives.
One of the novel’s greatest strengths is its atmosphere of distrust. No one feels entirely reliable, including Leila herself and fellow solicitor Davina. Just when I thought I had a handle on who could be trusted, the story would introduce another layer of doubt.
The characters are well-developed and morally complex, making it difficult to determine who deserves your sympathy and who deserves your suspicion. Murray also doesn’t shy away from addressing the misogyny present within Leila’s chambers. The dismissive and often condescending treatment she receives from her male colleagues adds another layer of tension and highlights the additional obstacles she faces while trying to prove herself professionally.
The mystery surrounding “Witness X” was particularly compelling. I spent the entire novel trying to identify this elusive figure, and despite my best efforts, I never successfully guessed the reveal.
⚠️ What Didn’t Quite Work for Me
While I enjoyed many aspects of the story, the ending ultimately didn’t land for me. The “you decide” approach is a storytelling device that rarely works in my favor, and unfortunately, that was the case here as well.
The pacing was also somewhat uneven. The first half of the novel moves slowly, taking time to establish the various threads of the story. However, once the trial begins, the narrative gains momentum and becomes significantly more engaging.
I also felt the novel was juggling a few too many storylines at once. Alongside the murder investigation and trial, readers are asked to follow Leila’s marital struggles, the mystery of the threatening messages she receives, and several other personal complications. While these elements contribute to Leila’s characterization, I found myself wishing the book had focused more tightly on the murder case and the strain it placed on her marriage. A narrower focus might have made the central conflict even stronger.
🎧 Audiobook Review
The audiobook narration added a great deal to my reading experience. The narrator provided distinct character voices that helped differentiate the many players involved in the case, making the courtroom proceedings easy to follow.
The performance particularly shines during testimony and cross-examination scenes, adding tension and drama at key moments. If you enjoy legal thrillers on audio, I would highly recommend this format.
🎯 Favorite Themes
- Justice versus truth
- Corruption and power
- Secrets and deception
- Ambition and professional advancement
- Moral ambiguity
- The complexities of the legal system
- Trust and betrayal
🔥 Favorite Quote
“Find the weakness in people and then exploit them. That’s where your power is.”
This quote perfectly captures one of the novel’s underlying themes. On the surface, it speaks to manipulation and control. Rather than presenting power as something earned through intelligence, integrity, or leadership, it suggests that influence comes from identifying another person’s vulnerabilities and using them to your advantage.
It’s a chilling perspective that echoes throughout the story as characters navigate ambition, relationships, and the pursuit of victory at almost any cost.
👀 Who Should Read This?
I would recommend Dissection of a Murder to readers who enjoy:
- Legal thrillers
- Courtroom dramas
- Multi-layered mysteries
- Complex investigations
- Detailed legal and procedural elements
- Fans of The Appeal by Janice Hallett
- Fans of Presumed Innocent by Scott Turow
- Readers who enjoyed His & Hers by Alice Feeney and want more courtroom intrigue
If your favorite part of a mystery is watching attorneys dissect testimony, challenge evidence, and battle for control of a courtroom, this book is well worth adding to your TBR.
⭐ Final Verdict
Overall, Dissection of a Murder is an engaging legal thriller that delivers a compelling mystery within an authentic courtroom setting.
I rated it 3.5 stars because I enjoyed the legal drama, the layered investigation, and the constant uncertainty surrounding both the case and the characters. However, the slower pacing in the first half, the abundance of competing subplots, and the open-ended conclusion prevented it from becoming a standout favorite.
While it wasn’t a perfect fit for me, it remains an entertaining and thought-provoking legal thriller that will likely resonate with readers who enjoy procedural mysteries and morally complex characters.
